Janet Marie Monsour

Janet Marie (Goddeeris) Monsour, born May 24, 1949 suddenly passed away on September 1, 2019. She was the second of eight siblings raised in Detroit, the daughter of the late John and Mary Goddeeris. She is survived by her loving daughter Clare (Brian) Brinkman, grandchildren Charlotte and Jake; four sisters, Karen McCoy, Patricia (Timothy) Dillon, Marianne (Steven) Bernard, Kathleen (Gerard) Saporito; three brothers, John (Diane) Goddeeris, James (Tracey) Goddeeris, Thomas (Mary Madigan) Goddeeris; brothers-in-law Fred McCoy and Bryan Harris and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband Joseph Monsour. Janet attended Regina High School in Harper Woods and Macomb County Community College. She enjoyed a long career in retail, beginning as a sales associate at the J.L. Hudson Co., rising to higher levels of responsibility in management and loss prevention as Hudson’s became Dayton Hudson, Marshall Fields and finally, Macy’s. She met her close friend Bonnie Phillips while there and spent her last day having a great time with her. Janet will be remembered as the heart of her family. She loved having the family come together to celebrate any small or large life event yet Christmas was always her favorite time of the year. She delighted in welcoming and following the lives of each new family member. She was the keeper and originator of many family traditions, Most famously, she conceived and organized for more than 50 years, a venerable “Cookie Day” tradition with her life-long friends Donna Wallace and the late Annette Fisher that became multi-generational and reached far beyond just family. Friends of family become part of her family. She taught us how to be inclusive of all and each and every one felt special to her. She will be missed. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, September 4th from 1 pm to 9 pm at the E.J. Mandziuk Funeral Home, 3801 18 Mile Road, Sterling Heights with a Rosary at 7 pm. She will lie in state at 10:30 am on Thursday, September 5th at St. Malachy Catholic Church 14115 E 14 Mile Rd, Sterling Heights with Mass following at 11 am. Memorials may be directed to a favorite charity of Janet’s - Heifer International (www.heifer.org) where together we can change the world and help end poverty and hunger.
