V. Jim “Pop’s” Bongiorno Called to Heaven – September 1, 2024 96 Years old “Pop’s” was born on May 21, 1928 to Italian Immigrant parents Vincenzo and Mary Bongiorno. He was the beloved husband of Joanne. Loving father of Jim (Cheryl), Terese (Tony), Chuck (Judy). Loving grandfather to Anthony (Natalie), Jenny (Adam), Chris (Megan), Anna (Mac), Michael., Sandy (Greg), Steve (Sarah), Dave (Laura). Loving great-grandfather to Lucas, Jacob, Audriana, Jesse, Anthony Nathaniel, Nathan, Simon, Giovanni, Finley, Emmy, Leo, Lucy, Matteo, Jesse, Luca. He was the 6th of 7 children. Preceded in death by Benedict, Grace, Anthony, Charles, Mary Francis and Felix. Pop’s was the epitome of devotion. His commitment to his family was the cornerstone of his life. From the time he became a husband and then father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he cherished the moments together. In addition to his family, Pop’s was a pillar of support to his friends. He was always willing to get involved and lend a helping hand. Pop’s genuine concern for others created a network of strength and support for many. He served in the army during the Korean War. Pop’s worked as a supervisor of the tool and die room at the GM Fisher Body Fleetwood plant for almost 40 years. There he met the love of his life, Joanne, and they married on June 27, 1953. Pop’s could do a little bit of everything. He was gifted with his hands. He could design, construct, and do repairs. His famous quote: “You can do anything and the impossible takes a little longer”. He loved to serve at his church. He volunteered for various positions, which included ushering, serving communion, designing the baptistry, and assisting the building supervisor. Together with his wife Joanne, they led the Seniors’ group called the “Golden Heirs”. He loved to read, travel, golf, bowl, play cards and work puzzles, and was an avid fan of the Detroit Tigers. Pop’s lived a long life and left a beautiful legacy of faith, loyalty and perseverance to his family and friends. “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith” 2 Timothy 4:7 The family will greet friends at Mandziuk & Son Funeral Directors of Sterling Heights on Thursday, September 5th from 3:00 until 8:00 pm. A Memorial service will be held on Friday September 6th at 11:00 a.m. at Community Christian Church in Sterling Heights. (An hour of visitation will precede the memorial service).
