Mary Ann (Porath) Cologie, age 78, beloved wife of Victor Cologie, adoring mother of James and Karen Edwards, stepmother of Michael Cologie and Melissa (Mike) Lundgren, loving grandmother of Brigit Edwards, Evelyn (Dylan) Johnston, Emma Lundgren, and Kyle Edwards. She is survived by siblings Lee Roy (Betty) Porath, Ilene Grant, and Richard (Denise) Porath, Linda (Don) Chamberlin and Debra (Richard) Geiman and her former husband Ronald Edwards. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Gwenevere (Gibbs) Porath, daughters, Cheryl Edwards, Ann Marie Edwards, brothers, Gordon and Raymond (Cindy) Porath, and sisters, Phyllis (Larry) Wasilewski and Barbara (Clem) Girard, and brother-in-law Jack Grant. Born on February 8th, 1944, in Wyandotte, Michigan and grew up on the family farm in Flat Rock. Mary attended Flat Rock High School and received her GED in 1979 from Huron High School, for which she was very proud. She attended Wayne County Community College and was certified as a Medical Assistant and enjoyed the technical aspects of preparing surgical packets. Never shying from hard work, Mary’s diverse employment history included Ford Stamping Plant, waitressing, office cleaning, and in addition to raising her own children, she was a nanny for the Scofield family for several years. Mary had many interests, one of which was playing pinochle with the same ladies for several decades. She loved bingo and could play over 30 cards at a time. She bowled on leagues. Mary loved to fish whenever she got the opportunity. She had a passion for flowers and gardening and couldn’t walk past a weed without pulling it, regardless of where or who was watching. In her later years she loved watching Detroit Red Wing hockey and the Tigers. She was a big fan of the show Survivor, anything to do with animal veterinarians, Alaska, or Mountain Men. Mary and Vic were long-time residents of Sterling Heights, Michigan, prior to their recent move to a senior living apartment in Shelby Township. Mary’s greatest joy was family and being a homemaker which earned her the title “White Tornado.” She enjoyed cooking and family holidays, and always welcomed the friends of the kids to join us. She was a true inspiration in the way she accepted Vic’s children as her own. Mary’s warm smile, fun spirit and sense of humor brought so much joy to her family. She was a fortunate recipient of a kidney transplant that granted her an additional 16 years of life. Her family will always be grateful to the donor for those additional years. The positive attitude she kept even in the most difficult times was truly remarkable. On Friday May 13th she died peacefully at home after 55 days in the hospital. Mary will always be remembered for her strength and courage and for the abundance of love she blessed us with.
