James "Jim" Lang

James "Jim" Patrick Lang, beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, died Aug. 22, 2026 at the age of 84. Jim was born Sept. 3, 1941 in Duluth, MN and was raised in Hibbing, MN, “the town that moved.” As an adult, he lived in California before making Michigan his home in the early 1980s. Jim loved his family, fishing, photography and lived a life full of adventure. After graduating from Bemidji State College with a bachelor of science in teaching, Jim moved to California for work in the salvage, appraisal and liquidation industry. He served in the Army Reserves for six years, and was honorably discharged in 1970. When Jim moved to Detroit, he met the love of his life: Cindi, a nurse who happened to be friends with Jim’s office assistant. This sparked a new chapter in Jim’s life. Jim and Cindi married on Feb. 23, 1985, and soon welcomed their two sons, Brian (Stephanie) and John (Kate). He played a constant and steady role in his children lives, and cherished his most recent role as Papa to his grandchildren. Jim was a man of many talents. He was a prolific woodworker, carving landscapes, decoys and recently, a full-sized rocking horse for his granddaughter. Genealogy was another passion of his, and Jim spent countless hours meticulously researching and building his family tree. He loved to spend time at the family’s second home in Port Austin, MI, entertaining friends and family, fishing for salmon and walleye on his boat, and perfecting his bocce ball court. He was a great support to Cindi in her professional work and her passion for the Urgent Care Association, where he was the unofficial photographer and staff volunteer. Jim was a patient man and a fighter, no matter what obstacles life sent his way, including surviving a massive heart attack at age 41. From that moment, Jim vowed to live every moment to its fullest. And he did. A trusted and reliable friend, Jim could always be counted on. He was always thinking of how he could help the people he cared about. All friends were family. We will always remember his generous and kind spirit. Jim is survived by his wife Cindi, two children, and two grandchildren (with one more on the way). He was preceded in death by his parents LeRoy and Mable, and his brothers Thomas and Jerome. The family will greet friends at on Thursday, Aug. 27, 2026 from 4-8 p.m. at Mandziuk & Son Funeral Directors of Sterling Heights. Funeral service Friday, Aug. 28, 2026 at 11:00am at the funeral home with an instate at 10:30 a.m. until the time of the service. Entombment to follow at Christian Memorial Gardens West.
